Beaches

The best beaches in Los Angeles are right outside our door

We know. You came for work. Shopping. Culture. A special event. But admit it -- you really haven't experienced LA unless you've cruised a bike path or worked just a tad on your tan at one of our miles of wide, sandy beaches. And you won't be disappointed -- just like everything else in the city, each beach has its own personality and quirks, so it's easy to choose the beach that's right for you:

Santa Monica:

Just continue straight on Wilshire Boulevard for a few miles and you'll be in Santa Monica - part diva, part action sports maven and all Southern California beach girl. Here you can partake in everything from family-friendly amusements like the Santa Monica Pier Ferris Wheel, to rollerblade the bike path or catch a beach volleyball game at Will Rogers State Beach.

Venice Beach:

You've seen it on every other TV show filmed in LA. Now experience the one-of-a-kind enclave on your own. Colorful characters selling everything from Rastafarian knit caps to Brazilian bikinis line the Venice Boardwalk. Take a stroll or rent some rollerblades and roll like a local past swaying palms and crooning street musicians.

Malibu:

Surfers, celebrities and the casually chic call Malibu home. Beaches here are great for surfing or just taking in the show. A photo opp from the Malibu pier is a must and for some high-end shopping, don't forget to check out Malibu Country Mart.

Temescal Canyon:

A favorite of local hikers and families, Temescal Canyon features grassy, oak-shaded picnic areas and a network of moderate-to-strenuous trails offering epic views of the Pacific.

South Bay:

If you're feeling a little adventurous, a drive down the nearby 405 Freeway will take you to the beach enclaves of Manhattan, Hermosa and Redondo Beaches, known collectively as the South Bay. These are still true beach communities, filled with surfers, sail boats and a miles-long boardwalk perfect for a beach cruiser.
